Tanfield Railway: a heritage day out

I’m almost embarrassed to admit it took me this long to visit Tanfield Railway, but what a place to discover for the first time. Set in beautiful countryside, the location is well signposted and has plenty of parking

Stepping back in time

So what exactly is Tanfield Railway? I’d describe it as a small but significant slice of Northern history. The collection of engines is impressive, and they’re clearly cherished, maintained by a team of enthusiastic, friendly volunteers and staff who bring the whole place to life.

The highlight of the day has to be the train ride. Travelling along the oldest working railway line in the world, which was originally used to transport coal across the region, adds a real sense of history to the experience. It’s not just a ride, it’s a journey back in time.

Walks, cafes and history too

There are several station stops along the route, with well-stocked cafés and plenty of places to sit and take it all in. It’s easy to make a relaxed day of it.

Dogs are very welcome too, and there are lovely walking routes that run alongside the railway through a historic woodland, including views of the magnificent Causey Arch, which is well worth seeing in its own right.

Don’t like trains?

You really don’t have to be a train enthusiast to enjoy Tanfield. There’s something here for everyone, and I’d happily return. It’s the kind of place that appeals to all ages—whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or just fancy a different kind of day out.

While it’s open at weekends, there are also plenty of special events throughout the year. From afternoon teas and fish and chips served on the train to live music events, there’s always something a little different happening. I particularly like the idea of experiencing it at Christmas—I imagine it must be quite magical.

Compact, friendly, informative and full of character, Tanfield Railway really does feel like stepping back in time.
