A winter visit to Kiplin Hall near Northallerton to follow the snowdrop trails, dodge muddy woodland paths and enjoy quiet views around the lake. With drifts of early flowers under the trees, a new café serving very good scones, and an easy drive back to Durham via the market town of Northallerton, it makes a gentle and rewarding seasonal day out.

As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days, when attractions across the region throw open their doors for free, we decided it was high time to pay a visit to Newcastle Castle. Despite living in the North East for most of my life, and passing the castle countless times, I had never actually stepped inside. It felt like a gap that needed filling.

Wallington in Northumberland is a National Trust estate perfect for families. With four play areas, woodland walks, and a walled garden bursting with colour, there’s something for all ages. Just an hour from Durham, it’s a great day out with picnic spaces and cafés on site.

Explore woodland trails, riverside paths and castle views at this unspoilt historic estate. Perfect for a Sunday outing with a picnic, though facilities are limited and paths aren’t pushchair-friendly.

Ormesby Hall is a National Trust property and turned out to be an excellent day out, even with the rain pouring down. For families looking for things to do with toddlers near Middlesbrough or Darlington, it really ticks a lot of boxes.
